SPORTS & OUTDOOR IN THE COSTA BRAVA

There are countless opportunities for sporting and outdoor on the Costa Brava. Beside the obvious pleasures of swimming, surfing or kayaking in some of the cleanest waters of the Mediterranean there are all sorts of activities to tempt you onto dry land. Our holiday homes villas and apartments in Costa Brava are set in fabulous surroundings and offer a full range of sporting possibilities tailored to your needs.

Cycling and mountain biking

If you're looking for excitement or just a bit of peace and quiet get up on a bike and discover the beauty of the forests, coves and the inlets of the Costa Brava. This region has an extensive network of signposted bike roads. Long-distance cyclists will enjoy the Ruta del Carrilet, which follows the old railway line from Olot to Girona and on to Sant Feliu de Guíxols through rolling countryside. You can rent a bike at several points along the way. There’s also a network of great off-road tracks, indicated by red signs with a bike symbol Some footpaths are also open to cyclists. Our holiday homes in Vidreras provide an excellent base for touring the mountainous surroundings.

Walking and hiking

You have a great variety of choice in the number of walks you can try. A network of signposted trails, following a clearly defined footpath cross the region. The two major long-distance routes touching the Costa Brava are the GR92, which runs along the French border to Portbou before cutting south to Barcelona; and the GR11, which runs east from Andorra heading to Cap de Creus. Local tourist offices stock free leaflets and maps outlining dozens of walks in their area. Among the loveliest routes is the Camí de Ronda made up of old coastguards’ and farmers’ trails that hug the coastline. It is possible to walk the entire coast from the French border to Blanes. Parts cut across nice beaches or follow a road for a short distance, while others snake over desolate headlands and can be quite arduous, although they’re often the best way to reach some of the more isolated coves.

Diving and snorkeling

With its coral beds and countless marine species Costa Brava is the ideal place for diving and snorkeling. The highlights of the Costa Brava include the submarine nature reserves of the Medes Islands near L'Estratit and sites in the Cap de Creus natural park, where the seabed has become the final destination to many boats and ships over the centuries. With such a number of dive sites and wrecks there are naturally many dive centers along the coast. Numerous diving schools offer a range of services from beginner courses to boat excursions and equipment rental. The main areas of interest are around the Illes Medes Maritime Reserve, famous for its fauna and coral beds, and the tiny inlets of the Cap de Creus and the coves near Begur and Palafrugell, where there are over three hundred species of fish, including barracuda and seahorses, drifting among coral and shipwrecks. Many schools also organize snorkeling excursions to the more inaccessible coves. With your own gear, you could head for easier-to-reach inlets in the southern Baix Empordà and northern Alt Empordà.

Water sports

Windsurfing is very popular, and there are plenty of operators renting equipment and running courses. Most towns have sailing clubs, and the area runs a number of competitive events. The most famous is the impressive Christmas Race of big yachts at Palamos. In most beach towns, water sports possibilities include jet-skiing, water skiing, as well as pedal. One of the best ways to explore the countless coves is by kayak. The largest kayaking company is based in L'Escala but the excursions leave from different locations, including Tamariu. A handful of operators can also rent you a small inflatable or rigid motorboat.
